When the directions of a stage-play instruct the characters to “talk amongst themselves”, they often do so by whispering the word “rhubarb” repeatedly to each other, because it contains no harsh-sounding consonants or clear vowels and so is hard to detect. This practice is said to have developed at London’s Princess Theatre as long ago as 1852.
